.

“The proposed Luna Laws seek to end this individualized instruction enjoyed by parents and teachers alike, not by eliminating parent-teacher conferences, but in the following ways:

1.  as they limit my ability to express what’s best for my students in my classroom and school by taking away my right to bargain;

2.   as they insist on pitting teachers against one another for rewards and bonuses,  and making teachers choose against working at the most difficult, at-risk schools because there’s no chance of receiving performance pay;  and

3.  as they require all students to be taught the same way, with laptops and online classes required, regardless of their individual learning styles or differences.“

“As the 2012 Idaho Teacher of the Year, I had the opportunity to travel across the United States this year meeting with other State Teachers of the Year.  I spoke frequently with teachers who taught in primary grades.  We excitedly shared our favorite lessons and compared notes on what teaching looked like for us in our various states.  Each teacher was amazed at the number of students I had in my classroom.  Their classes ranged from 18 to 21 children while my first grade class has increased to 25 students since the “Students Come First” laws were enacted.”

“I have been blessed with the opportunity to get paid for what I love to do…and that is teaching.  Exploring curriculum, creating engaging lesson plans to deliver the content and developing varied assessments to see how students learned the material excites me!  I recognize that when my time and effort is focused on these things, I do not have the time to represent myself, and what I do, at a state or national level.”

“I am passionate about education and teaching. Just ask the students I’ve taken on dirt roads to teach at tiny rural schools, or ask the students in those one room school houses I’ve visited for over 35 years.  Being passionate is something I’ve never kept a secret! My mission has always been to provide an atmosphere in which I can nurture and promote a student’s creativity, to take education outside of classroom walls and into the real world to allow student’s a chance to touch, see, hear, and smell the world.   Each student is unique and learns in a way that is personal. To expect that a computer can read a mind or hold a hand or allow a student the opportunity to experience a real world is absurd.”

“I am encouraging everyone to vote no on Propositions 1, 2, and 3. I am fortunate enough to work in a well-run, award winning high school.  All of our decisions at the district and building levels have been based on what is best for our students. Our graduation rate is superb and our goal is to prepare our students for whatever type of post-secondary education they choose.  This requires cooperative, dedicated, and talented teachers that do more than deliver curriculum. They counsel, cajole, encourage and work hard to get every student to achieve the goals set by the state and our local school board.”

“I’ll state the problem simply:  Idaho’s lawmakers are not living up to their responsibility to adequately fund education as Idaho’s constitution requires.  Being ranked 50thout of 51 when compared with state level per pupil spending is not a distinction I have been proud to proclaim.  Unfortunately, the new laws regarding education are an additional blow to Idaho’s patrons and children.”

“Vote no on Proposition 1, 2 and 3! All three propositions are wrong for Idaho’s most important resource, our children. I teach for several different reasons. At the bottom of this list of reasons is for the money. It is silly to think that the professionals I spend my day with are motivated by money.  We are intrinsically motivated to help students become all that they can be.”
